Let there be blood

Posted in Pre-production on May 28, 2010 by gtpmsm

A couple of weeks in the lab, (i.e. laundry room) and I have a workable blood formula.  It is completely non-toxic and about as non-staining as you can get.  That doesn’t mean you should drink it.  But, should you decide to take a few pulls from the jug, the side effects should be minimal.

Methylcellulose Powder

After a first failed attempt at making fake blood from off the shelf stuff, I decided to go with a formula using methylcellulose powder.  From a variety of Internet sources, I received all sorts of info on how much powder per how much water.   I’m not sure what my ratio will end up being, but I can tell you that a half-cup to a gallon is probably a bit thick for my blood tastes.

Blood Pump

After a few trips to the hardware store, I assembled my first ever blood pump. We will need some blood squirting action and for a first attempt at this type of contraption, I am quite pleased. The interesting thing about it is that you are piecing together things from various departments that were not necessarily meant to go to together. And it is not like you can really ask for help either. “Yes, I need to squirt blood out of neck stump, but I want to divide it into two streams… you know, because I am sure there is more than one vein in the neck when a head is severed…”
